AIMS
 

Environmental Aims

a) emphasise and protect elements of the environment which provide a sense of place and define local character;
b) protect the countryside;
c) ensure good quality public open space is available within reasonable walking distance of every home in the urban area and the larger villages and that this open space is maintained and protected.
 
Sustainability Aims
a) create a sustainable pattern of development;
b) safeguard and promote the vitality and viability of district and village centres;
c) assess all new development in terms of sustainability to ensure the maintenance and enhancement of biodiversity, reducing the need to travel, the prudent use of natural resources, the maintenance of air, soil and water quality and the preservation of historic and natural features of interest and importance.
 
Access Aims
a) encourage the reduction of road congestion and improve highway safety;
b) reduce the growth in the number and distance of journeys by car;
c) develop transport corridors from the City to the outlying areas to allow for convenient and attractive public transport;
d) ensure that district centres, local centres and employment sites are accessible by a good choice of public transport;
e) encourage a wide range of shopping and other facilities in district and other centres to meet the communities day to day needs thereby reducing the need to travel.
 
Housing Aims
a) help satisfy all the housing needs of the Borough;
b) protect and improve the residential amenity of existing and future residential areas.
 
Employment Aims
a) enable new employment opportunities to be created and assist in the retention of jobs.

The Countryside
11. Protect the areas of the countryside which are most important for their landscape, wildlife and natural features.

13. Provide appropriate management of the countryside and comply with the objectives of the Greenwood Community Forest.
14. Ensure that villages retain their integrity through the protection of open countryside surrounding them.

1. To enhance and improve the physical environment of the district shopping centres through quality design and ensure ease of access within centres for all members of the community.

2. To ensure district centres and where necessary local shopping centres cater for a choice of transport including, the car-borne shopper.

    Arnold - ensure Arnold's primary role through the retention of a range and quantity of convenience and comparison shops, the incorporation of new retail developments which could extend shopping choice and the consideration for the evening economy and complementary uses.
    Carlton Square - improve physical linkage between the Square and Tesco.
    Mapperley Plains - retention of retail and financial and professional service uses and limit rapid rise in food and drink uses.
    Netherfield - encourage a positive approach towards the re-use of vacant sites with consideration to alternative uses which could include service, leisure and residential. To contract the shopping centre.
